Heterocycles constitute the largest division within classical organic chemistry and are of immense industrial, biological, and societal importance. Research interest in heterocyclic compounds is rapidly increasing, driven by extensive synthetic studies and their wide-ranging functional utility. An in-depth study of the structures and properties of various heterocyclic compounds is essential for effective synthesis, diverse transformations, and the advancement of further applications. Combining studies of the structural properties of heterocyclic compounds with their synthetic methods, conversion reactions, and application research is crucial for the future development of heterocycles in chemistry and biopharmaceutics.

This Research Topic focuses on the synthesis, transformation, and application of heterocycles, welcoming studies on both their structures and properties. The goal is to develop novel synthetic systems, innovative modes of transformation, and diverse applications for heterocycles, and to facilitate new discoveries by advancing our understanding of their structures and properties.

To achieve these aims, we have two main objectives. Firstly, we seek to establish additional pathways for the synthesis of various heterocyclic compounds. By conducting detailed electronic and structural analyses of intermediates and transition states in these processes, we can identify key factors that influence the discovery of new mechanisms for heterocycle formation.

Secondly, we aim to explore diverse transformations of heterocycles. In addition to the transformation of C–H bonds in heterocyclic compounds, modifying the core framework of heterocycles (skeletal editing) to access unique chemical and functional spaces is essential. We also aim to advance deconstructive functionalization—breaking traditionally strong bonds, such as C–C, C–N, C–O, C–S, and C–Si bonds, and functionalizing their constituent atoms—particularly in saturated cyclic amines, to reach new areas of chemical space.

In summary, this Research Topic aims to advance the field of heterocyclic chemistry through the development of new synthetic methodologies, transformation strategies, and applications for heterocycles.
