The landscape of child health in China is changing fast. Rising incomes, urban growth, and shifting diets have increased childhood obesity rates, with over 15% of children now overweight or obese in urban areas. Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is also climbing, but access to care varies widely—rural families often face long delays for diagnosis and treatment. Accidental injuries, such as falls or traffic accidents, remain a top cause of hospital visits for children, especially in less-developed regions. Infectious diseases, such as influenza and pneumonia, strain healthcare systems, with outbreaks exposing gaps in prevention. These challenges are shaped by China’s diverse regions: urban centers typically have better resources, while rural areas struggle with limited clinics and less adequately trained staff. New public health risks, like sudden disease outbreaks, add pressure on children’s health. Meanwhile, parents are more aware of health issues, demanding better care.

The purpose of this Research Topic is to analyze the current and future burden of common conditions occurring in children, identify effective management strategies, and address disparities in care across urban and rural areas. This Research Topic will explore specific trends, gather China-specific data, and propose innovative, practical solutions to guide doctors, policymakers, and communities in reducing disease incidence, improving child health outcomes, and ultimately lessening the burden of common pediatric conditions. It will also explore the impact of emerging public health events, proposing practical, multidisciplinary approaches to strengthen pediatric healthcare nationwide.

Authors are invited to submit original research, reviews, meta-analyses, or perspectives addressing the following specific themes:

• Trends in prevalence of pediatric obesity, ASD, accidental injuries, appendicitis, and pneumonia, with data on socioeconomic or environmental drivers.
• Community-based or school programs to prevent or manage childhood obesity in urban and rural settings.
• Advances in ASD diagnosis and care, focusing on overcoming regional barriers in western or rural China.
