The field of aging research is gaining unprecedented attention as the global population continues to grow older. Central to this research is an exploration of the biological mechanisms of aging which led to the identification of new research avenues. Recent advances have highlighted areas such as "inflammaging," which highlights the role of chronic low-grade inflammation in the aging process, with key cells and cytokines emerging as potential targets for therapy. Furthermore, the role of the microenvironment, crucial in maintaining tissue homeostasis and repair via stem cell activity and extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis, is increasingly recognized. Additionally, accurate assessment of aging is equally important. Various scales and detection instruments have been developed to provide measurable biological aging metrics, which can help evaluate the efficacy of different anti-aging interventions, especially in regenerative medicine. However, despite progress, gaps persist in fully understanding these processes and effectively translating findings into targeted anti-aging interventions.

This Research Topic aims to provide an integrated understanding of aging by addressing fundamental mechanisms and exploring their potential therapeutic value, with a particular focus on the skin. The main objective is to investigate key areas such as stem cell function, the regulatory role of the micro-environment on cellular behavior, and the molecular underpinnings of inflammaging. Additionally, it seeks to identify emerging applications within regenerative medicine, novel materials, and other innovative technologies with a focus on bridging basic research and clinical practices. By fostering a comprehensive understanding of these aspects, this Research Topic endeavors to guide future research and promote advancements in anti-aging therapies, encouraging collaboration across scientific and clinical domains.
