Endophytic and symbiotic fungi play crucial roles in plant health by enhancing growth, improving nutrient acquisition, and increasing resistance to both biotic and abiotic stresses. These beneficial interactions are mediated through both direct and indirect mechanisms, including the production of phytohormones, nutrient solubilization, synthesis of antimicrobial compounds and proteins, induction of systemic resistance, and antagonism against phytopathogens. Recent advances in fungal biology, omics-based research, and studies on plant–microbiome–fungus interactions have revealed the complexity and diversity of these multi-kingdom associations.

This Research Topic aims to compile cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews focused on the ecological, physiological, and molecular aspects of endophytic fungi (e.g., Trichoderma spp., Epichloë spp.) and symbiotic fungi (e.g., arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, AMF) involved in plant growth promotion and disease suppression. We particularly welcome contributions addressing biotechnological applications, roles in climate change mitigation, and their overall impact on sustainable agricultural practices. To advance the understanding of endophytic and symbiotic fungi as pivotal drivers of plant health and resilience, highlighting their ecological, physiological, and molecular roles in promoting growth, nutrient acquisition, and disease suppression. By integrating cutting-edge advances in fungal biology, omics technologies, and plant–microbiome interactions, this topic initiative aims to foster interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange that will support sustainable agricultural practices.

This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, reviews, and short communications that explore the biology, ecology, and biotechnological applications of endophytic and symbiotic fungi — including Trichoderma spp., Epichloë spp., Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., Clonostachys spp., Aspergillus spp., and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) — as well as studies addressing plant–pathogen interactions.
