In Earth Sciences, understanding tectonic processes and rift dynamics is crucial for deciphering the complex interactions that shape our planet’s surface. Rifted margins constitute the link between continental and oceanic realms and thus are key in studying lithospheric deformation, tectonic plate interactions and evaluating petroleum resources in sedimentary basins. Decades of research have shed light on their diverse architecture, magma budget, sedimentary and thermal evolution, offering new insights on the connection between deep and superficial Earth’s processes. Despite significant advancements, there remain critical knowledge gaps in our understanding regarding the intricate processes of crustal deformation and alteration by magmatism, fluid flow, tectonic reactivations and the time-space evolution of continental and oceanic rift systems.

This Research Topic aims to advance the scientific knowledge involving tectonic, volcanic and sedimentary processes of rifted margins and foster the development of new concepts, interpretations and models. By focusing on the mechanisms that play crucial roles in the genesis and kinematics of microplates, rift propagators, and the influence of inherited structures on the sedimentary environments and depositional processes, this topic seeks to bring forth contributions that deepen our understanding of the complex modus operandi driving rifted margins with special focus on the Central and South Atlantic.

We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Mechanisms and models of crustal deformation at divergent rifted margins;
• Case studies from less studied regions highlighting new discoveries;
• Advanced geophysical/geological imaging techniques for studying continental and oceanic rifts;
• Interactions between tectonic, magmatic, and sedimentary processes;
• Integration of field geology, potential methods, and seismic interpretation of salt and shale structures;
• Comparisons with global analogs and physical and numerical models that provide insights into the Central and South Atlantic evolution;
• Challenges, new concepts and future directions in divergent, convergent, and transform margin geodynamics.
