The urban power grid is a network system that provides power supply to urban areas, consisting of transmission grids, distribution grids, and power generation facilities, covering grids of various levels from high voltage to low voltage. The urban power grid is one of the fundamental infrastructures for urban modernization and serves as the main load center of the power system, with significant electricity consumption. It is characterized by large scale, high load density, high reliability, and high requirements for power supply quality.

With the increasing requirements for urban environmental protection and the development of renewable energy, a large number of conventional thermal power plants within urban power grids have been forced to shut down, while large-scale renewable energy generation in suburban areas and internally distributed new energy generation have developed rapidly. The increasing dependence of urban power grids on external energy uncertain inputs, the reduction of internal regulatory resources, the insufficient energy flow ability between regional power grids, and the uneven distribution of source and load in core areas have put forward higher requirements for urban power grid planning, scheduling, and control.

With the development of information and communication technology, advanced control techniques, and integration of a more power-electronic-dominated urban power grid, the ability to provide a reliable power supply for critical loads in transmission and distribution networks can also be enhanced. New techniques like frequency/voltage control strategies, data processing methods, optimal operation and planning models, novel control in power-electronics-enabled power systems, and AI-based control strategies for various kinds of operation resources in power systems are emerging. These technologies will have a critical effect on the dynamic performance improvement, resilience, and power equality enhancement of the urban power grid.
