The neuroendocrine system plays a central role in maintaining homeostasis, managing stress responses, and influencing the aging process. As the body grows older, hormonal signaling often becomes dysregulated, a shift increasingly associated with chronic inflammation, elevated oxidative stress, and cognitive decline. These interconnected changes, commonly referred to as "inflammaging" and "oxiaging," are thought to contribute significantly to the development of neurodegenerative diseases and disturbances in hormonal balance. Emerging research suggests that the aging of the neuroendocrine system is not merely a consequence of overall physiological decline but may actively drive pathological changes in the central nervous system. Alterations in the activity of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, fluctuations in gonadal hormones, and imbalances in thyroid function have all been linked to age-related neuroinflammation and oxidative damage. A clearer understanding of these hormonal dynamics is urgently needed to inform strategies for protecting cognitive function in later life.

This Research Topic aims to explore how changes in endocrine function contribute to inflammation, oxidative stress, and the decline of cognitive health with age. We aim to foster interdisciplinary dialogue among experts in neuroendocrinology, immunology, and aging biology. The goal is to clarify how hormonal signals interact with immune and oxidative processes in the aging brain and to uncover potential molecular targets that could guide new treatments. We welcome studies that investigate biomarkers of neuroendocrine aging, examine the impact of hormone therapies, and evaluate anti-inflammatory and antioxidant approaches for restoring hormonal and cognitive balance in older adults. By bringing together diverse lines of evidence, this collection seeks to deepen our understanding of how the endocrine system shapes brain health and to inform the development of therapies that can help delay or reverse age-associated cognitive disorders.
