Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is increasingly prevalent in modern societies. It is estimated that 1 in 3 people worldwide may be affected, and by 2030, MASLD is expected to become the leading indication for liver transplantation globally. Driven by changes in lifestyle and dietary habits, MASLD is closely associated with metabolic dysfunctions such as obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Despite advances in the understanding of its pathophysiology, effective management remains a challenge. Numerous studies have identified dietary interventions as a cornerstone in the management of MASLD, underscoring the potential of precision nutrition to tailor dietary strategies to individual metabolic profiles. However, debates persist regarding the most effective dietary components and approaches, and key knowledge gaps remain, particularly in translating genomic, epigenetic, and microbiome insights into actionable dietary plans.

This Research Topic aims to explore the role of precision nutrition and dietary interventions in managing MASLD. The objective is to consolidate current knowledge and foster innovative strategies that integrate genetic, epigenetic, and microbiome data to personalize nutrition guidelines. We aim to address critical questions about the influence of nutritional genomics on MASLD outcomes, test hypotheses on nutrient signaling pathways, and better understand how diet impacts hepatic metabolism and fibrogenesis. Focusing on the wide scope of precision nutrition in MASLD, we welcome contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

I. Effects of macronutrient composition on liver health beyond caloric intake.

II. Diet-induced changes in the gut microbiome and their implications for liver health via the gut–liver axis.

III. Mechanistic insights into nutrient-hepatic pathway interactions

IV. Use of digital health tools in the monitoring and delivery of precision nutrition

V. Interaction between GLP-1 receptor agonists and nutritional strategies in improving outcomes in MASLD.

VI. Role of nutrigenomics and nutriepigenomics in the progression of metabolic liver disease.
