The field of plant-based therapy in veterinary medicine has a rich history, dating back to antiquity, with the use of naturally-occurring compounds such as opiates in poppy or digitalis glycosides in foxglove. However, these have largely been replaced by synthetic derivatives in modern times. Despite this, there has been a recent surge of interest in the application of Cannabis ingredients in both human and veterinary medicine, suggesting that botanical therapy still holds significant clinical relevance. However, there are ongoing debates and gaps in knowledge regarding the efficacy, side effects, and potential interactions of these therapies with commonly used drugs.

The primary aim of this research topic is to accumulate a series of articles that delve into the application of plant-based therapy in veterinary medicine. The goal is to conduct controlled studies to investigate the efficacy, side effects, and potential interactions of these therapies with commonly used drugs. A particular focus will be on identifying the pharmacologically-active ingredients in plants to optimize dosing regimens in animals. This research will also aim to provide a better understanding of the current state of knowledge and highlight existing gaps in the field.

The scope of this research topic is defined by its focus on the veterinary use of botanicals. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
