Sepsis is a critical issue in the field of infectious diseases and immunology, posing a significant challenge to global health due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. Emerging from initial hyper-inflammatory responses to infections, sepsis advances into widespread organ dysfunction and immunosuppression, rendering patients susceptible to subsequent infections. Central to this complexity are the dual roles of inflammation and immune suppression, which underscore the crucial need for comprehensive understanding and intervention. Recent studies have advanced our understanding of these mechanisms, yet many questions remain, particularly regarding the molecular underpinnings and variable patient responses. Despite technological advances and increasing genomic data linking genetic predispositions to sepsis outcomes, significant gaps in effective treatments and diagnostics persist.

This Research Topic aims to illuminate the multifaceted pathogenesis of sepsis alongside investigating the intricate pathophysiology across various organs such as the lungs, liver, brain, kidneys, bones, skin, eyes, prostate, and heart. Our objective is to drive forward research that not only clarifies these relationships but also harnesses genomic studies to pinpoint critical functional genes, explore mechanisms of organ-specific susceptibility, and identify promising therapeutic targets. By integrating clinical observations with experimental research, we aim to enhance the fidelity of diagnostics and the efficacy of therapeutic interventions.
