Microorganisms have continued to captivate the scientific community due to their vast genetic diversity and resilience, unique compared to other life forms on Earth. Their ability to thrive under varying conditions has allowed them to persist and evolve over centuries, significantly shaping their environments. Microbial dynamics, as studied through trophic interactions, gene expression, and ecogenomic adaptations, highlight their immense adaptability, even when constrained by nutrient availability. Yet, academia has barely scratched the surface, with the current understanding accounting for only about 1% of Earth's microorganisms, including those in extraterrestrial environments. The search for life-supporting biomolecules via advanced genetic analysis focuses heavily on bacteria and archaea, given their promising applications.

This Research Topic aims to explore and harness metagenomics and bioinformatics tools to uncover novel biomolecules possessed by microorganisms and unlock their potential for applications in health and industry. There is an increased need to identify genetic attributes and biomolecular outputs of microbial taxa for developing disease treatments and overcoming lifestyle-related conditions. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies promises to enlighten and broaden our understanding of microbial genomics and opens new avenues for therapeutic and preventive healthcare solutions.

To gather further insights into the microbiome at the human-animal-plant-environment-space interface, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

Microbial taxonomy and functional characterization
Contribution of microbiomes to non-communicable and chronic diseases
Microbial interventions in inherited and genetic disorders
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and new measures for infectious disease control

Additionally, submissions can include original research articles, brief research reports, case reports, perspectives, and innovative technologies and tools for microbiome investigations.
