Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) plays an important role in global sugar production, comprising almost 20% of the output. With climate change intensifying, sugar beet is increasingly recognized as a viable alternative to sugarcane in temperate and semi-arid regions. This shift is driven by the crop's potential adaptability to various climatic conditions. However, sugar beet's productivity is under significant threat from abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, alkalinity, and extreme temperatures, all of which compromise photosynthetic efficiency, disrupt metabolic activities, and hinder sucrose yield. Recent research has delved into the metabolic and molecular responses to these stresses, highlighting drought's impairment of plant water status and salinity's impact on ion balance. The latest studies suggest that genomics, alongside transcriptomics and proteomics, offers promising pathways for breeding stress-resilient sugar beet varieties.

This Research Topic aims to explore the integration of advanced genomic tools like CRISPR/Cas9 and systems biology with conventional breeding practices to enhance the stress tolerance of sugar beet.
