Childhood pneumonia remains a pressing public health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where it is the leading infectious cause of death and illness in young children. This acute infection of the lower respiratory tract disproportionately affects children under 24 months of age and poses a significant obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 by 2030. The clinical presentation of pneumonia is non-specific and largely encompasses symptoms such as cough, fever, fast breathing, and difficulty breathing. Fast breathing, a reliable clinical sign, often signifies pneumonia in young children and can lead to complications like hypoxaemia, increasing the risk of mortality. Recent years have seen a shift in understanding pneumonia etiology, recognizing its viral and bacterial nature, and highlighting the growing relevance of evaluation tools like pulse oximetry and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).

This Research Topic aims to explore the complexities of childhood pneumonia by addressing critical areas such as its epidemiology, etiology, and complications. It will also delve into the advancements in diagnostic techniques, such as the use of POCUS, and the role of biomarkers in assessing pneumonia's severity and need for antibiotics. A particular focus will be placed on the impact of recent vaccinations and improvements in socio-economic conditions in reducing pneumonia-related deaths and the vital strategies needed to maintain these gains. Equally important is the advocacy for increasing pneumonia's presence on the global health agenda, recognizing it as a marker for healthcare system strength and inequity.
