Historically recognized as the "powerhouse of the cell," mitochondria carry out additional dynamic functions crucial for nutrient sensing, signaling, and stress responses. Growing evidence has linked disruptions in mitochondrial metabolism to an array of diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic syndromes, and aging-related conditions. Modern technological advances, such as omics platforms, bioenergetic profiling, and high-resolution imaging techniques, have expanded our understanding of mitochondrial plasticity, their communication with other organelles, and their regulatory role in immune modulation - highlighting them as potent therapeutic targets.

This Research Topic aims to bridge existing knowledge gaps by examining how mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to disease pathology and how these insights can inform therapeutic approaches. The focus will be directed towards unraveling the complexities behind mitochondrial bioenergetics, dynamics, and signaling pathways that underpin disease progression. By illuminating mitochondrial plasticity, inter-organelle communication, and the metabolic pathways they govern, we aim to identify emerging therapeutic targets. Emphasis will be placed on exploring innovative pharmacological and genetic interventions to modulate mitochondrial function, seeking to convert mechanistic insights into clinical benefits.
