The field of alkali metal batteries is at the forefront of research due to its promise of high energy density and potential to outperform traditional lithium-ion batteries. A critical factor in determining the performance of these batteries, such as their cycle life, rate capability, and safety, is the interface within the battery system. Recent studies have made significant strides in understanding and controlling these interfaces, yet there remain challenges, particularly in issues like dendrite formation, electrolyte degradation, and polysulfide shuttling in lithium-sulfur systems. A comprehensive understanding of interface interactions and their impact on battery performance is necessary to unlock the full potential of these next-generation energy storage systems.

This Research Topic aims to explore the latest advancements and innovations in interface engineering tailored for alkali metal batteries. The objective is to unravel strategies to precisely control and characterize interfaces such as the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and the cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI). The goal is to address challenges such as stabilizing lithium/sodium metal anodes, preventing dendrite growth, and improving interface stability. Further, it seeks to enhance cathode/electrolyte interface design for lithium-sulfur batteries and mitigate polysulfide shuttle effects, as well as investigate interface evolution and stabilization of high-capacity anodes like alloys and conversion-type materials.

To gather further insights in interface engineering for alkali metal batteries, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Precise regulation and in-situ characterization of SEI/CEI
• Strategies for dendrite suppression and interface stabilization in lithium/sodium anodes
• Cathode/electrolyte interface design and polysulfide shuttle inhibition in lithium-sulfur batteries
• Evolution and stabilization mechanisms of interfaces in high-capacity anodes (e.g., alloys, conversion materials)
• Advanced modeling and simulation of interface dynamics in alkali metal batteries
