Porous crystalline networks, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and porous organic polymers (POPs), are gaining attention for their potential in the field of electrochemical energy storage. Their tunable pore structures, combined with high specific surface areas and customizable functional sites, make them a promising class of materials for enhancing energy storage systems. Recent studies have demonstrated their potential to improve ion transport behavior, enhance active site utilization, and address several challenges in the energy storage process by leveraging their unique porous architectures. However, the link between the intricate design of these porous structures and their practical deployment in high-performance energy storage systems requires further investigation.

This Research Topic aims to explore the synergy between the structural design of porous crystalline networks and their effective application within energy storage technologies, such as zinc-ion batteries, lithium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors. The primary goal is to develop novel approaches that can optimize these materials for high efficiency and extended lifespan, meeting the increasing demand for sustainable and robust energy storage solutions. Specific questions to be addressed include understanding how the structural attributes influence ion transport and active site engagement, as well as identifying strategies to overcome inherent challenges faced in energy storage applications.
