River-reservoir systems play a critical role in the global water cycle, supporting both biodiversity and human livelihoods. However, anthropogenic activities and climate change have profoundly altered their ecological processes. These changes affect nutrient cycling, sediment transport, energy flow, and species interactions, thereby threatening ecosystem health and resilience.

Despite advances in research, a comprehensive understanding of the integrated ecological processes in river-reservoir systems remains limited. This special issue aims to address these gaps by highlighting interdisciplinary studies that explore the dynamic interactions and feedback mechanisms within these systems.

This Research Topic seeks to advance knowledge of ecological processes in river-reservoir systems by synthesizing recent research on their structure, function, and responses to both natural and anthropogenic drivers. We encourage submissions that employ innovative methodologies—including modeling, remote sensing, field experiments, and multi-scale analyses—to elucidate the patterns and mechanisms that govern these ecosystems. Our goal is to provide a platform for sharing insights that can inform sustainable management and conservation strategies for river-reservoir systems worldwide.
