As members of a social world within which interaction needs and communicative tools are intertwined in a series of situated relationships, interactions among individuals and groups emerge from the very beginning of life. Thinking about how we participate in an interaction, through verbal and non-verbal exchanges, enables us to focus on explicit and implicit norms, personal and collective preferences, subjective and interpersonal theories, and the social processes of construction of meaning that characterize communicative interactions.

Although discursive, conversational, and argumentative interactions play an essential role in our lives, there is no single, integrated area of psychological research on these types of communicative interactions. A wide range of studies examines the different roles played by social actors within interactions (symmetric-asymmetric, protagonist-antagonist, teacher-learner), as well as the constitutive aspects of interactions (emotional, motivational, cognitive) and developmental factors such as skills, competences, and knowledge. However, research on discourse, conversation, and argumentation is conducted in multiple, separate research communities spanning disciplines, with only limited overlap. It is therefore necessary to create a space for open dialogue among researchers interested in discourse, conversation, and argumentation from a psychological perspective.

This Research Topic has two main goals:

(1) to explore novel and promising theoretical perspectives for studying discursive, conversational, and argumentative interactions from a psychological perspective

(2) to provide a platform for the latest innovative research on discursive, conversational, and argumentative interactions among individuals, groups, and institutions, and to shed light on the most recent methodological developments for examining these types of interactions.

As such, this Research Topic offers an ideal opportunity for researchers working across international contexts to bring their work together in a shared forum. It will present state-of-the-art evidence of the breadth of psychological research on discourse, conversation, and argumentation, and it will highlight opportunities for mutual awareness and integration, with implications for international research and theory in these areas.

The Research Topic welcomes high-quality original research, reviews, commentaries, and perspectives on topics dealing with these issues. The Topic Editors are particularly interested in psychological perspectives on discursive, conversational, and argumentative interactions and in empirically supported approaches to analyzing them.
