Given the success of Volume I and Volume II of this Research Topic, and how rapidly the subject area is evolving, we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume III: Tumorigenesis Regulated by miRNAs.

Non-coding RNA molecules, particularly microRNAs (miRNAs), play a significant role in the regulation of gene expression and are crucial to the pathological processes of cancer. These miRNAs are emerging as key contributors to tumorigenesis, influencing the expression of oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes through their action in specific genomic regions related to cancer. The field has observed that miRNAs, due to their localization in cancer-associated genomic loci, can undergo changes in copy number due to chromosomal abnormalities, leading to significant alterations in gene expression patterns across various cancers. This dysfunctional expression is almost universally recognized across tumor types, shedding light on their potential as biomarkers for cancer origin and type.

This Research Topic aims to delve deeper into the regulatory roles of miRNAs in cancer, seeking to uncover new miRNAs that can manipulate gene expression linked to tumor onset and progression. By focusing on these small but powerful molecules, the goal is to expand our understanding of how they contribute to the mechanics of cancer and explore their potential in advancing cancer diagnosis and treatment.
