Neurodegenerative diseases represent a major challenge for healthcare systems worldwide, with cognitive decline being among their earliest and most disabling manifestations. Understanding how cognitive processes deteriorate across different disorders is crucial for identifying reliable early markers and tailoring clinical interventions. This Research Topic aims to bring together studies investigating cognitive alterations in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, and related disorders. We welcome contributions exploring neural and behavioral signatures of cognitive impairment, novel assessment tools, and predictive models of disease progression. Equally encouraged are papers addressing the management of cognitive symptoms, as well as innovative approaches to cognitive rehabilitation and digital therapeutics. By integrating evidence from neuroscience, neuropsychology, and clinical practice, this collection seeks to advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying cognitive decline and to foster the development of personalized therapeutic strategies aimed at improving patients’ quality of life. We seek contributions that advance our understanding of how cognitive functions change across neurodegenerative diseases and how these alterations can serve as early indicators of disease onset and progression, particularly welcome studies employing behavioral, neuroimaging, and electrophysiological approaches to investigate cognitive decline, as well as studies focusing on clinical populations and interventions targeting cognitive preservation and rehabilitation.

This Research Topic explores cognitive changes associated with neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on early detection, mechanisms, and interventions. We welcome submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:

-Early cognitive markers of neurodegenerative disorders and their potential role in diagnosis and prognosis.
-Neural, behavioral, and computational models explaining the mechanisms underlying cognitive decline.
-Multimodal approaches, including neuroimaging, electrophysiology (i.e EEG, MEG, fMRI), and digital biomarkers.
-Assessment tools and cognitive testing paradigms for the detection of subtle impairments in attention, memory, language, and executive functions.
-Longitudinal and cross-sectional studies exploring disease progression and cognitive trajectories.
-Intervention studies targeting cognitive preservation and rehabilitation.
-Innovative digital or remote cognitive training tools applicable to clinical and home-based settings.

Contributions focusing on cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, psychology of aging, and related disciplines to foster an integrated understanding of cognitive dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases will be welcomed.
