The intersection of neuromodulation and neuropharmacology reflects a rapidly evolving frontier in understanding and treating Parkinson's disease (PD) and related neurodegenerative disorders. Historically, PD management has predominantly revolved around dopaminergic replacement and symptomatic control. However, emerging evidence underscores a crucial need to address underlying cellular dysfunctions such as mitochondrial impairment, oxidative stress, protein aggregation, and immune system alterations that significantly contribute to PD onset and progression.

Simultaneously, non-invasive neuromodulation techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) offer promising avenues to modulate neural circuits, promote neuroplasticity, and potentially slow neurodegeneration. These approaches, particularly when integrated with pharmacological and molecular strategies, suggest the possibility of synergistic neuroprotective effects.

This Research Topic aims to explore the mechanistic and therapeutic convergence of neuromodulation and neuropharmacology, emphasizing how interventions at both the cellular and circuit levels can reshape the future of PD treatment.
We welcome contributions across a broad spectrum, from basic science studies on synaptic and glial dysfunction to translational research on combined stimulation-drug therapies and clinical trials targeting disease-modifying outcomes. By fostering a dialogue between cellular neuroscience, pharmacology, and neuromodulation, this collection seeks to illuminate innovative cross-disciplinary strategies capable of addressing both the symptoms and underlying pathology of Parkinson’s disease.
