Research into allergic diseases has increasingly revealed the intricate connections between host-microbiome interactions, environmental exposures, and the onset and course of allergic conditions. The field now recognizes that allergic diseases emerge from dynamic, multifactorial relationships that encompass not only genetic susceptibility, but also environmental determinants, such as pollutants, allergens, and lifestyle factors, and the communities of microbes inhabiting the gut and mucosal surfaces. Recent studies have moved the focus from seeing the microbiome as a passive background to acknowledging its active role in immune modulation and disease trajectories. However, despite advances, significant questions remain about the mechanisms by which probiotics and environmental factors shape the microbiome’s contribution to allergic disease development and persistence, and how these could be leveraged for intervention.

This Research Topic aims to deepen our understanding of the bidirectional interactions among probiotics, environmental factors, and the microbiome in allergic diseases. Key goals include elucidating the mechanisms by which probiotic strains and microbiome changes impact immune responses and allergic inflammation, determining how specific environmental exposures influence host-microbiome interplay, and assessing the translational and therapeutic potential of probiotic and microbiome-targeted strategies for managing allergies. Bringing together diverse perspectives, the aim is to foster a holistic view and identify new directions for allergy prevention and care through environmental and microbial lenses.

The scope of this Research Topic is limited to studies investigating the interactions among probiotics, the microbiome, and environmental factors in the context of allergic diseases, excluding research solely focused on non-allergic disorders or unrelated immune pathologies.
