Potassium (K) channels are integral components of cellular membranes that play crucial roles in regulating excitability, ion homeostasis, and signaling pathways across various organ systems. These channels are of significant interest due to their involvement in physiological functions such, as insulin release and vascular tone control. Given their widespread importance, dysfunctions of K channels are often linked to a variety of pathological processes, notably in the context of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). These diseases, including cancers, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological disorders, are leading causes of global morbidity and mortality. Thus, elucidating the role of K channels in NCDs is critical for advancing medical knowledge and treatment options.

This Research Topic aims to investigate the diverse roles of K channels in NCDs, with a focus on how their dysfunction contributes to disease development and progression. The main objective is to delineate the potential of these channels as pharmacological targets, for the development of diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic agents. By focusing on the non-conducting functions of K channels, as well as their tissue-specific localization, genetic and epigenetic regulation, and roles in inflammation and immunity, new opportunities for developing targeted therapies for NCDs can be uncovered. Towards this goal, this research topic aims to foster an understanding that will contribute to translating recent scientific discoveries into clinical applications.
