Given the outstanding impact of " Nutritional Management of Childhood and Adolescent Obesity and Related Diseases ", Frontiers in Nutrition is pleased to launch Volume II of this successful Research Topic, which will focus on both childhood and adolescent obesity.

Childhood and adolescent obesity constitutes one of the most challenging public health problems of our century due to its epidemic proportions and the related significant morbidity and mortality, increasing also public healthcare costs and overal quality of life. The prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity has considerably increased in the last few decades across all the world regions, ranging from 4% in 1975 to more than 18% nowadays. Alarmingly enough, children and adolescents with obesity demonstrate a 5-fold higher risk of remaining obese in adulthood. Notably, childhood and adolescent obesity is a major risk factor for many chronic pathological conditions, including three of the main non-communicable diseases worldwide: diabetes mellitus type II, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. A common risk factor associated with childhood and adolescent obesity concerns nutrition or the type of diet that children and adolescents adopt in their daily lives. Several nutritional interventions have been proposed with the aim of reducing the prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity. The currently available research reinforces the urgent demand for the development and implementation of well-organized public strategies and policies that could inform the future parent about the beneficial effects of diverse nutritional interventions at the early stages of their children's and adolescents' s life in combination with other lifestyle factors, e.g., physical activity, against childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity.

In this aspect, the present Research Topic will be focused on novel research efforts which aim to evaluate potential nutritional interventions, including either specific dietary patterns or foodstuffs ingredients, which may prevent or even co-treat childhood and adolescent obesity and related diseases.

• Nutritional interventional and observational studies on dietary patterns for the prevention and/or co-treatment of childhood and adolescent obesity and related diseases.

• Nutritional interventional and observational studies on naturally occurring bioactive compounds and foodstuffs ingredients for the prevention and/or co-treatment of childhood and adolescent obesity and related diseases.

• Nutritional management and lifestyle counseling of children and adolescents affected by obesity and related diseases.

• Dietary patterns, bioactive compounds, and foodstuff ingredients with anti-obesity properties: potential molecular mechanisms.

• Nutritional management of childhood and adolescent obesity and quality of life promotion.
