About this Research Topic
Aquaculture has exceeded captured fisheries in suppling nutrients to a fast-growing human population. Still, culturing the water bodies of our blue planet is just in its infancy, and has the potential to dominate food production in the decades to come. Aquaculture includes hundreds of species and animals, and their products are among the most traded commodities. This causes aquaculture establishments to be connected to complex network relations regionally as well as globally. Technology is a major force driving the industrialization of aquaculture, leading to the possibilities to generate large amounts of data. While the use of such data is currently often not exploited, also complementary biological disciplines are lagging behind in their effort to generate knowledge required for biologically and ecologically sustainable development.
Disciplines like epidemiology, in interaction with ecology, biology, oceanography, climate and economics, are heavily needed in order to provide computational power and knowledge to support the animals, industry and competent authorities. Considering that several advancements have been made regarding empirical research, advanced modelling techniques, and the integration of different areas of sciences, we seek for this Research Topic papers on methodology and solutions that are important to support decision makers and the sound development of the aquaculture industry.
