About this Research Topic
Safety is the most important section of energy usage. This is particularly true for chemical energy storage systems, such as lithium ion batteries. Recently, the applications of lithium ion battery in electrical vehicle have obtained significant interest and development throughout the world. This increased popularity can be partly associated with the excellent electrical performances of lithium ion batteries. However, the safety performance of lithium ion batteries is poor, especially when it is facing difficult conditions, such as high temperature, mechanical damage and electrical abuse.
From the end user point of view, the thermal management of lithium ion batteries is necessary to ensure the safety of lithium ion batteries either in consumer equipment or electrical vehicles.
The aim of the present Research Topic is to review the recent developments performed in all aspects of battery safety:
• Thermal stability of the materials
• Thermal runaway mechanism
• Thermal runaway propagation
• Thermal management
• Battery fire behavior
• Practical applications of batteries and techniques for improved safety.
We hope to inspire further interest and new research efforts in this exciting area.
