Perception, imagination, memory, and discursive thought are experienced not just as streams of visual, verbal, or other modal content overlaid with emotion; such experiences also include a variety of epistemic feelings indicating certainty or doubt, subjective probability, utility, a sense of the source of the modal content, agency, and ownership.
While the importance of such feelings is recognized, their implementation and role in Cognition are not well understood. The study of such feelings is, moreover, distributed across a broad range of subdisciplines ranging from Perception and Decision Science to Robotics and Neuropathology.
Abstracts and full manuscripts are solicited in all areas concerning the phenomenology, implementation, and role in cognition of epistemic feelings. Experimental, computational modeling, hypothesis and theory papers and reviews are all encouraged. Papers considering both typical functioning, including common errors and biases, and dysfunction and pathology in systems supporting epistemic feelings are welcome. Interactions and interdependencies between epistemic feelings, e.g. the relationship between source monitoring, the sense of agency, and confidence assignments are of particular interest. Developmental and lifespan studies and considerations of the role of epistemic feelings in well-being are also of particular interest.
This Research Topic is hosted in several sections of the journal and the authors are encouraged to submit their paper to the section that best suits the scope of a given manuscript. Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology is the primary section and the authors are welcome to submit to this section their theoretical papers as well as experimental research if it was built on a strong theoretical foundation. Depending on the focus of a specific manuscript, the authors may want to submit their research papers to the following sections: Cognition, Perception Science, Consciousness Research and Emotion Science.
