About

This Research Topic will focus on several research aspects of edible and medicinal plant and it is an initiative linked to the International Conference on Medicinal and Food Plant Research & 3rd Sino-CPLP Symposium on Natural Products and Biodiversity Resources happening in April 2021.

There is an increasing awareness for the understanding of pharmacological mechanisms, applications and regulation of plants that are both medicinal and edible, used for clinical, sub-health and well-being enhancement applications, which has been long rooted in different ethno-medicinal systems. Emerging diseases and health issues, lifestyle and diet changes also urge us in seeking novel bioactive substances from plant sources, particularly those with dual-purpose of medicine and food. Related study requires interdisciplinary approach including pharmaceutical sciences, food sciences, medicine, plant sciences, policy study on food and drug administration, etc. Articles merging these topics and Ethnopharmacology may be helpful in reaching an international consensus among scientific and industrial communities.

The investigation on plants that are both medicinal and edible is an interdisciplinary approach. Despite related practices and products have been rooted and used in medical practices, there are still a lack of scientific understanding and investigations for active ingredients, their synergistic and networking effects, lack of clear boundary definition in medicinal use and functional use, lack of clear inclusion criteria and regulation policies in the related studies and products. It could be of interest and needs for the scientific community to consider topics such as the development of proper pharmacological and physiological models, the development of novel and practical active substance delivery systems, holistic evaluation of the short term and long-term effects of the plants and the phytoconstituents.

In this Research Topic we aim to provide a discussion forum for the community and we welcome the following subtopics, but not limited to:
• Cultivation and pharmacognosy of medicinal and food plants.
• Ethno-pharmacological practices and pharmacological investigations on medicinal and food plants, with the focus on lifestyle related diseases and sub-health; food function and safety evaluation of selected plants; identification of novel pharmacological and biological effects of plants.
• Analysis of biomarkers (active compound, representative compounds, prohibited and excessive substances) of medicinal and food plants, quality assessment of herbal materials and their final products.
• Strategy on the development of pharmaceutical, nutraceuticals and functional products.
• Policy and regulation on food and medicine dual purpose products.
