With the improvement of medical technology, the average life expectancy of human beings is getting longer. Population aging is becoming an increasingly significant issue worldwide. The consequent high incidence of degenerative bone and joint diseases (DBJDs) such as osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc degeneration and osteoporosis places a huge medical burden on society. Oxidative stress occurs when the organism's antioxidant defense system is overwhelmed by the overproduction of free radicals (such as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species), which can lead to oxidative damage to cells including DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, and protein misfolding, and even cell death. Although studies have confirmed the important role of oxidative stress in DBJDs, the current understanding is still one-sided. With this, there is still a lack of clinical approaches to diagnose or treat DBJDs through the detection or modulation of antioxidant-related molecules. Therefore, we look forward to further elucidating the role of oxidative stress in DBJDs and paving the way for the subsequent development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
In short, the goal of this Research Topic is to expand our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress in DBJDs and to further stimulate the exploration of its potential diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets, from basic pathological mechanism research to clinical translational applications. We hereby invite multidisciplinary scholars to participate in the discussion of this research topic in the form of original research or review articles. We encourage authors to shine the spotlight particularly on the exploration of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for DBJDs based on the pathological mechanisms of oxidative stress.
