Oxidative stress and inflammation are associated with the initiation and progression of a variety of pathological conditions. In the past few decades, the interaction between oxidative stress and inflammation in the central nervous system (CNS) have been active and important research topics in cardiovascular and neural diseases. For example, in both chronic heart failure and hypertension, oxidative stress and inflammation in different brain sites such as the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM), and area postrema (AP) have been reported to promote sympatho-excitation and autonomic dysfunction, which accelerates the pathological progression of these diseases.
On the other hand, there are fewer studies on the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) in pathological states. Recently the National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiated the Common Fund’s Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions (SPARC) program, which seeks to accelerate our understanding of the PNS modulation of organ function. Building on the initiative of the SPARC program, we propose this Research Topic to call for manuscripts that study the roles of oxidative stress or/and inflammation in the PNS. Our interest will be primarily, but not limited to two areas: cardiovascular diseases (e.g. heart failure, hypertension, peripheral arterial disease and diabetes) and neural disorders (e.g. acute and chronic pain syndromes). The scope of this Research Topic will apply to any work that focuses on oxidative and inflammatory mechanisms of peripheral nerve transmission, nerve axonal function and neural soma activity in sympathetic, parasympathetic and sensory ganglia in these diseases.
