The awareness of greenhouse gas emissions’ impact on the environment has raised a lot of questions regarding the continuous utilization of fossil-based fuels as the main source of energy. To this effect, advances in research and development have increased the share of renewable energy in the energy mix. However, as the global energy demand continues to increase, energy derived from fossil sources continues to play a significant role. There is presently a global energy transformation drive from the existing fossil fuel-dominated energy landscape to a low carbon energy mix with the primary objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Studies have shown that natural gas could play a significant role in the transition to a decarbonized energy economy due to its peculiar advantage of the ease to switch from coal to natural gas. Moreover, natural gas can serve as a back-up to the intermittent renewable energy generation. However, the use of natural gas for low-carbon energy generation has not been widely accepted either by policymakers or environmental-centric researchers.

This Research Topic is poised to focus on the various technology advances in the utilization of natural gas as a strategy in transition to a sustainable energy system. Also, the prospect and the challenges of utilizing natural gas as a means of achieving a decarbonized energy economy are expected to be covered. In addition, the different strategies to diversify and manage fossil fuel-based energy systems with increasing deployment of renewable energy and other green resources, as well as the environmental impacts of these technologies, are expected to be addressed. We invite scientific contributions with concepts, frameworks, and methods that deal with various advanced technologies for transforming natural gas to a low-carbon energy economy for potential publication in this Research Topic. The scientific contributions could be Mini Review articles, Perspective articles, Policy and Practice Reviews articles and Brief Research Report articles. The Topic Editors welcome any themes related to, but not limited to, the following list:
• Technological pathways to achieving a decarbonized energy system via natural gas utilization
• Hydrogen-rich syngas production by reforming of natural gas using CO2, oxygen and steam
• Hydrogen production by photocatalytic steam reforming of methane
• Gas and sustainable energy development
• Machine learning application in conversion of natural gas to low-carbon energy resources

• Life cycle assessment and cost analysis of natural gas conversion technologies
• Global prospect, policies and environmental impact of natural gas conversion technologies
