Programmed cell death (PCD) plays a key role in different physiological processes in plants. It is pivotal in plant development as well as in plant immunity or ageing. In the last decades, many signaling elements have been characterized involving different cellular compartments. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been shown to be key players of PCD. ROS act as signals as well as effectors by oxidizing macromolecules. Different ROS production site, ROS target and ROS responsive genes have been described depending on cell type. Plant hormones as gibberellic acid (GA), Abscisic acid (ABA) or methyl jasmonate are involved in ROS induced PCD. However, the different signaling pathways and mechanisms involving ROS to achieve PCD remain unclear.
This Research Topic aims to provide an overview on the new insights about regulatory and signaling events controlling PCD. Particular attention will be paid to the involvement of oxidative regulated events triggering PCD. Indeed, the activation of ROS production sources, antioxidant regulation, ROS induced modifications on targets as proteins and nucleic acids, signaling events, ROS and hormone interplay and ROS gene regulation are different questions of high interest.
