The role of glycans in cellular processes associated with pathologies and aging is intriguing and still largely not clarified. Glycan turnover is more dynamic than that of other classical signalling molecules, as it is related to space-time and affected by the surrounding environment. To unravel the role of glycans in pathologies, opening the way to translational research exploiting glycoscience, new glycotools--able to relate cellular behaviour to the presence of different glycans in the cell microenvironment--need to be developed.
The combination of advanced carbohydrate synthetic strategies and cutting-edge characterization methods of glycans and glycan-receptor interactions represent promising tools to unravel the role of glycans in cell-cell, cell-extracellular matrix, and cell-host interactions in distinct disease mechanisms. This Research Topic aims to become the point of reference in addressing the above points. More specifically, we aim to collect the efforts and future challenges in this area covering both diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
We welcome Original Research and Mini Review articles in themes including, but not limited to:
• Design and synthesis of glycans related molecules, polymers and probes for cell fate control, cell-receptor and cell-pathogen interaction studies
• Development of novel methodologies to decipher glycan-related mechanisms in pathological processes
• Design and synthesis of analogues or mimetics of immune-active glycosides
• Design of new diagnostic solutions targeting glycan interactors
