Neglected tropical diseases, including a variety of parasitic infections (i.e. protozoal and helminthic infections, etc.) represent a significant cause of morbidity and mortality on a global scale. Whether causing severe disease at the maternal-child interface, blindness, destruction of the central nervous system, or any of a multitude of other clinical manifestations, these pathogens impact human health substantially, with consequences at the individual level and with economic and public health implications.
While the focus of much of the scientific community has justifiably shifted in recent months/years to the urgent matter of understanding the novel coronavirus, the challenges presented by neglected tropical diseases have not changed, and infections with these parasites, viruses, and bacteria continue to cause suffering, loss of life, and loss of economic productivity the world over.
In this Research Topic, we aim to gather and present the latest scientific data in neglected tropical diseases as it relates to molecular mechanisms that drive pathogenesis/immunity, identification of novel diagnostic/therapeutic modalities to identify and treat disease, as well as studies that suggest possible new methods for prevention of disease in the first place. We will cover diseases caused by a variety of protozoal organisms, including but not limited to:
Protozoa: Cryptosporidium, Eimeria, Coccidia, Isospora, Giardia, Entamoeba, Plasmodium, Babesia, African Trypanosomes, Toxoplasma, Neospora, Sarcocystis, Trichomonas, Trypanosoma cruzi, Leishmania, etc.
We welcome submissions of Original Research, Review, and Mini-Review encompassing basic science, translational research, and epidemiological studies that focus on but are not limited to:
• Identification of underlying molecular mechanisms that drive disease/immunity in the context of pathogen-host interactions for neglected tropical diseases;
• Characterization of novel methods for the diagnosis of infection/implementation of new diagnostic modalities for neglected tropical diseases, with special emphasis being placed on those modalities with potential for real-world application in the developing world;
• Identification of molecular targets for drug design/compounds with efficacy in the treatment of pathogens causing neglected tropical diseases, either in vitro or in vivo, with a particular interest in those with potential clinical utility;
• Original contributions in the field of immunoinformatics to identify new vaccine candidates
• Newly proposed methods for disease prevention or identification of risk factors for transmission in the context of neglected tropical diseases (whether that be methods for interruption of environmental or vector-borne transmission, identification of contributors to disease risk, etc.);
In conclusion, this Research Topic will bring together different approaches looking for solutions in epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention to advance the management of these neglected tropical diseases.
