Glycemic control in children with type 1 diabetes is important in reducing the risk of onset or progression of chronic complications. One of the most common complications in type 1 diabetes is diabetic nephropathy or diabetic kidney disease, developing in 15-20% of individuals with type 1 diabetes. Children with type 1 diabetes and their parents or caregivers must become acclimatized to the continuous self-management associated with avoiding these complications. Glycemic control aims to effectively control blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipids of a diabetic patient. Approaches include lifestyle changes to diet and exercise, as well as medication and insulin doses.
This Topic seeks to identify the different conditions impacting effective glycemic control in children with type 1 diabetes. These include, but are not limited to:
- Socioeconomic impacts on glycemic control;
- Dietary impacts on glycemic control;
- Impact of activity level on glycemic control;
- The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on glycemic control;
- Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion; and
- Multiple daily insulin injection therapy.
Submissions are also welcomed identifying the results of glycemic control in children with type 1 diabetes. These include, but are not limited to:
- Impact on risk factors for diabetic nephropathy or other complications of type 1 diabetes;
- Psychological impacts of glycemic control on children with type 1 diabetes and their parents/ caregivers.

Keywords: glycemic control, type 1 diabetes, pediatric diabetes
