Nevertheless, long-term adherence to physical activity and exercise programs, which is key to such earned health and psychological benefits, is still low, with large proportions of population groups failing to meet the recommended amount of physical activity.
Participation in physical activity is associated with better self-rated wellbeing. Seemingly, people operate against their best interests. It is well known that in particular, intrinsic exercise motivation is associated with higher exercise adherence. Moreover, goal attainment is important for the continuation of a behavior. Concerning physical activity, adherence might be linked to perceived changes in physical and mental factors which can be integrated into the construct of wellbeing. Indeed, wellbeing encompasses physical and mental factors related to an individual’s perception of health and happiness, as well as being able to respond successfully to challenges. The association between physical activity and wellbeing, however, does not explain why some people adhere to exercise and some do not. Do adhering people perceive specific benefits which are part of the wellbeing concept, or are there people who are non-responders in terms of wellbeing outcomes? While we know about the influence of motivation and barriers for exercise adherence, we don’t know what specific factors of the wellbeing construct, perceived by the individual, are important for exercise adherence. Therefore, we invite manuscripts that investigate factors related to the wellbeing construct in connection with physical activity adherence in healthy and/or clinical populations. In particular, we welcome studies that use more objective measures of physical activity in connection with wellbeing outcomes.
The main objective of this Research Topic is to increase our understanding of the association of wellbeing factors with physical activity adherence. This can include longitudinal studies with healthy and/or clinical populations. However, well-designed cross-sectional studies will also be considered.
