High-quality development is a sustainable development centered on improving the quality and efficiency of development and enhancing human well-being. Global issues such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and reduction of ecosystem services and products have created great uncertainty for human social development. At the same time, human demand for economic development and a better ecological environment is increasing. Under such circumstances, high-quality development that synergizes economic growth and environmental protection is a necessary pathway for the sustainable development of human society.

Various studies have analyzed the path of achieving high-quality development from economic and industrial perspectives in the existing literature. However, research in ecological quality monitoring, ecological risk reduction, ecosystem restoration and management are also essential to achieve the goal of high-quality development. It requires scholars to explore multiple research areas such as the supply and demand balance of ecosystem services, process mechanisms of ecological, social, and economic activities, and spatial optimization pathways to support the continuous enhancement of human well-being. This Research Topic is intended to encourage scholars and experts to disseminate the most recent theory and practice of high-quality development in ecological and environmental aspects, to provide some references for the exploration of possible solutions to achieve the goal of high-quality development.

We welcome submissions but are not limited to the following areas:
• Mapping of ecosystem service using remote sensing and in situ observations
• Types, patterns and consequences of interregional ecosystem services flow (including characters of providers and consumers, regional dependency and equity, Sustainable Development)
• Strategic approaches for multi-objective (climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, etc.) optimization integrating ecosystem service trade-offs, synergies and human well-being

Keywords: High-quality development, ecosystem service, human well-being, landscape, ecological restoration, remote sensing, ecosystem service valuation, carbon emission and carbon reduction, urban ecological transformation

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
