The increasing global demand for sustainably sourced animal-derived food has prompted the development and application of smart technologies to address environmental, economic and societal concerns, resulting in the emergence of Precision Livestock Farming (PLF). In particular, the last two decades have witnessed novel approaches and technological iterations, with the goal of improving housing conditions, health monitoring and environmental footprint of livestock and poultry farms, among other elements typical of the food production chain.

In addition to encouraging multidisciplinary efforts, PLF has inspired the latest generations of early career scientists to achieve a new level of impact within this emerging field. Their work is central to the recent accomplishments and to ensure that smart technologies are at the center of a scientific revolution in the field of animal science.

This editorial initiative aims to showcase the high-quality work of internationally recognized scientists in the early stages of their careers, highlighting research across the entire breadth of Precision Livestock Farming, focusing on new insights, novel developments, current challenges, and future perspectives.

The Research Topic solicits articles that will inspire, inform, and provide direction and guidance to researchers in the field, and welcomes contributions covering:
• Smart animal farming
• Precision nutrition of animals
• Sensor technologies applied to husbandry
• Automated monitoring of animal behavior
• Technologies to monitor health at individual and herd level
• Artificial intelligence solutions for animal production
• Animal environmental engineering
• Robotics

Please note: to be considered for this collection, the first or last author should be a researcher contacted by the Topic Editors. While the contributors to this collection have been personally suggested by the Topic Editors and the Editorial Office, unsolicited submissions can also be considered. Please contact the Editorial Office (animalscience@frontiersin.org) if you are planning on submitting a manuscript.

Keywords: precision livestock farming, agriculture, livestock, precision farming, farming, animal science, animal production

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
