Laser field manipulation is currently one of the hot topics in the photonics community, through which the laser’s potential is well tapped and contributes to various unique fields with many amazing features. For instance, novel fields as the femtosecond laser, frequency comb, scalar optical vortices, and complex Poincare beams can be obtained through tailoring various degrees of freedoms of beams as time, wavelength/frequency, phase, spatial structure, and polarization, respectively. The attractive characteristic of laser field manipulation has inspired lots of advanced applications ranging from classical to quantum physics as large-capacity data transmission and storage, optical trapping, remote detection, optical computing, optical neural network, quantum entanglement and astronomy, thus attracts sustained attention.
Lots of efforts have been paid to promote laser field manipulation toward multiple degrees of freedom with favorable performance. Schemes of generating structured beams from both intra- and extra-laser resonators are put forward. Very recently, developments in the design and fabrication of diffraction optical elements bring a new revolution for more complex structured beams, and laser field manipulation is achieved even on chip. In addition, advances in laser field manipulation have also stimulated a wider range of cutting-edge applications. The goal of this Research Topic is to focus on the recent advances in laser field manipulation and their enabled applications, build a bridge of distinct sub-areas integration, and further promote the development of laser field manipulation.
