Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are photon detection devices that use the photoelectric effect combined with secondary emission to convert light into an electrical signal. The silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), also known as Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC), is becoming a popular choice of photodetectors in applications where even single photons must be detected. PMTs and SiPMs are widely used in nuclear and particle physics experiments, especially in the neutrino observatory experiments where hundreds or even thousands of large-area PMTs are employed to detect scintillator photons or water Cherenkov light. So there are many special requirements and performance tests for the PMTs within different research projects, which will help the factory to design and produce new types of PMTs.
In nuclear physics and high energy physics experiments, researchers developed a variety of new photoelectron devices, but the related production technology which formed a standard calibration method, cannot keep up with such research progress, or cannot meet the needs of the test. Therefore, with the development of semiconductors, electronics and other new devices, the calibration method of the photoelectron device also requires further upgrades to meet the real needs. We need to build various hardware test systems, improve the testing process, and also provide professional calibration data for the researchers, who use these photoelectric devices. For the two common types of vacuum electronic devices and silicon-based photoelectric devices, we plan to study their performance in the Single Photon detecting, uniformity scanning, time characteristics, temperature effect, magnetic field effects, irradiation effect and absorption effect, and also the methods for these performance testing.
For this Research Topic, high-quality Original Research and Review articles are all welcome. Topics include but are not limited to the followings:
1. The simulation and design of the new type of PMTs and SiPMs.
2. The Performance test method for the devices to evaluate the charge, the time resolution, the noise, the energy resolution, the uniformity of the photocathode, and so on.
