The world’s traditional hydrocarbon reserves are in rapid decline and will be unable to meet the future demand for energy. Successful exploitation in the unconventional tight/shale formations is playing an increasingly important role in balancing out this shortage, however, new challenges are encountered in numerous areas related to the development of such resources, including but not limited to the micro/nano scale pore characterization, sweet-spot identification, fluid flow in the complex fracture-matrix network, hydraulic fracturing design, fracture geometry prediction, intelligent well completion, reservoir performance optimization, application of data analytics and machine learning approaches.
This Research Topic aims to present the challenges as well as the new advances in the exploitation process of unconventional tight/shale resources, starting from fluid flow mechanisms and new developing technologies, to field pilots and applications of the new perspectives and methods. The special issue will advance the fundamental understanding in this area and bring positive impacts to the development of the global unconventional oil and gas industry.
