Studies have shown that various molecules present in food and food supplements (e.g. Retinoic acid, Curcumin, Chicoric acid, Resveratrol, Fucoidan, Capsaicin, and Piperine) have beneficial effects on brain damage from injury and disease, impacting various areas from molecular biological mechanisms to cognition and behavior.
While a lot is known about the mentioned compounds regarding their beneficial effects on brain health maintenance, not enough is known to apply them as medication for the treatment of brain damage due to injury and disease. With this Special Issue, we want to encourage a systematic approach to the topic of the efficacy of specific natural compounds regarding brain damage, at molecular biological as well as cognitive and behavioral levels.
We welcome Original Research, Review, and Perspective articles covering topics including but not limited to:
• Clinical questions including dosage, uptake from the intestines, distribution via the bloodstream, and transport over the blood-brain barrier.
• The complementary and enhancing effects of these compounds when given in combinations.
• Potential impact on a healthy bacterial flora (microbiota).
• Optimal application of these compounds for maintaining brain health and brain recovery, from molecular biology at cell and tissue levels to cognition and behavior, while avoiding deleterious side effects.
• The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, anti-cell death, modulation of mitochondrial activity, modulation of gene expression, cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation effects of the natural compounds.
• Tissue and organism effects including health maintenance, arresting progressive tissue damage, regeneration, wound healing, and angiogenesis.
