Insect pests and plant diseases pose a significant threat to food security. Intelligent monitoring is the base for making reasonable controlling strategies to improve control efficiency. It provides essential information for early warning, which reduces pesticide application and increases crop yields. Frequent extreme weather phenomena and the severe damage caused by invasive pests have put more pressure on crop protection in the new century. In this case, it has become an inevitable trend to adopt more efficient methods to improve the efficiency of monitoring insect pests and plant diseases. In recent years, scientific and technological progress has promoted the advancement of intelligent monitoring methods and the realization of high-efficiency long-term monitoring and early warning. However, to interpret more information provided by these methods and tools, clarifying the living mechanisms and patterns of insect pests and plant pathogens is still the key for monitoring and early warning.

In terms of technical means for monitoring pests and plant diseases, accurate identification of monitoring targets is still the main bottleneck, and long-term stable operation has always been the direction of technological development. Furthermore, revealing the outbreak and damage mechanism of pests and diseases and clarifying the development of their populations is the theoretical fundament of monitoring and warning. Therefore, we need more research that focuses on investigating the interaction mechanism of pests and pathogens with crops and their developing pattern, as well as the development and evolution of intelligent monitoring technology.

In this Research Topic, we welcome all article types published by Frontiers in Plant Science that clarify the development of intelligent monitoring of insect pests and plant pathogens, especially those that focus on:
• The living patterns and outbreak mechanisms of insect pests and plant pathogens
• The evolution of existing intelligent monitoring and forecasting technology of insect pests and plant diseases, like entomological radar, lidar, remote sensing, IoT, communication, and simulation technology et al.
• The development of target identification technology with artificial intelligence
• The development of a monitoring and forecasting device and system

Keywords: intelligent monitoring, insect pests, crop diseases, forecast and early warning, identification, AI
