Machines and robots are being increasingly considered as our companions in different forms, in present and future life. Although relevant progress has been made recently in the technological design and delivery of these products, the ability of machines, robots, and artificial intelligence to interact with humans in a natural and intuitive way is still insufficient.
This Research Topic will focus on the broad field of social interactions with artificial agents, not only considered as embodied physical robots but also in the field of human-machine interaction and interaction with artificial intelligence. Therefore, this collection will include studies on social cognition and social neuroscience related to:
• interaction with robots and machines (focused on engagement, perceived human-likeness, trust, deception, collaboration, performance, theory of mind, perceived intentionality);
• cognitive ergonomics (attention, cognitive/neural resources and cognitive/neural efficiency of visual setups);
• interaction with artificial intelligence (chatbots, virtual assistants, artificial agents in specific contexts).
We welcome both behavioral (quantitative and qualitative) and neuroscientific studies - with methods such as magneto/electroencephalography (M/EEG), neuroimaging via functional magnetic resonance imaging or functional near-infrared spectroscopy fMRI/fNIRS, brain stimulation, or peripheral methods as skin conductance, heart rate variability or pupillometry) on neurotypical as well as clinical populations (for example, interventions with young participants with ADHD, conduct disorders, autism spectrum disorders, or elder people with dementia).
