Various neurological disorders have a dramatic negative influence on health-related quality of life. Different deleterious functional changes may feature in a range of neurological disorders and health conditions. Neural rehabilitation engineering integrates engineering principles and methods with neuroscience and rehabilitation medicine, leading to better health outcomes for neurological disorder and aging related conditions. It plays a critical role in advancing neurorehabilitation through better understanding of the mechanisms underlying functional impairment, development of novel rehabilitation and assistive devices, and objective evaluation of impairment severity and rehabilitation progress and outcomes.

This research topic aims to promote a wider recognition of neural rehabilitation engineering, share the current state-of-the-art trends, challenges and directions, and encourage further development of neural rehabilitation technologies. The research topic welcomes development of innovative concepts, hypotheses, designs, tools, techniques and devices that assist individuals who have unmet needs related to mobility, sensation, communication and cognition, due to neurological injury or advanced aging. The development can be preliminary in nature but likely stimulate further research. The research topic welcomes extensions or updates to previously published studies such as reporting additional controls and confirmatory results, novel analysis and interpretation of previous data, improvement of established tools or devices, and reporting of negative and null results, etc.

Research Topic include, but are not limited to:

Neural-machine interfaces
Biomedical signal processing and control for neurorehabilitation
Neuromuscular electrophysiology
Neuromodulation and neural plasticity
Neural prostheses and assistive technologies
Rehabilitation robotics and exoskeletons
Myoelectric control
Artificial intelligence and machine learning in neurorehabilitation
Neural and biomechanical computation
Novel biomarkers for neuromuscular diagnosis and prognosis

Keywords: neurological injury, neuromuscualar disease, aging, rehabilitation engineering, briefs

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
