About this Research Topic
Recent research has suggested that there may be an important link between metabolism and psychiatric disorders. In particular, it is becoming more and more apparent that metabolic dysregulation may contribute to the onset and course of several psychiatric diseases. For instance, research has revealed that abnormalities in lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism, and other metabolic pathways are frequently present in people with autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders as well as in patients affected by mood and eating disorders. Studying this relationship could have substantial consequences for the prevention and treatment of such problems since metabolic dysregulation may result in changes in brain function and structure, which is one reason for the connection between metabolism and psychiatric disorders.
The goal of this Research Topic is to use a broad approach to explore the association between metabolism and a variety of psychiatric disorders to unravel new insights into the underlying mechanisms of these conditions and help identify new targets for treatment. We welcome the submission of a range of different article types (research article, brief research article, mini-review, review, case report, opinion, perspective, etc..) focusing on, but not limited to, the following themes:
• From dys-metabolism to neuro- and/or psychopathology
• From mental disorders to metabolic diseases
• From psychotropic drugs to dys-metabolism
