Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the supporting tissues of teeth, has been identified as a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The association between periodontitis and CVD is attributed to the systemic dissemination of oral bacteria and their byproducts, leading to chronic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. Several epidemiological and clinical studies have suggested a significant correlation between periodontitis and an increased risk of developing CVD, including coronary artery disease, stroke, and atherosclerosis. However, the underlying mechanisms and the impact of periodontal treatment on CVD outcomes require further investigation.
Understanding the shared clinical problems between periodontitis and CVD is crucial for improving patient treatment outcomes and developing effective multidisciplinary management strategies.

The goal of this Research Topic is to address the existing knowledge gaps and present the problem of the shared clinical challenges in the treatment of patients with periodontitis and cardiovascular disease. We aim to explore the potential bidirectional relationship between these two conditions and identify effective interventions that could improve patient outcomes. Specifically, we seek to investigate the impact of periodontal treatment on cardiovascular health and elucidate the underlying mechanisms linking periodontitis and CVD. Additionally, we aim to evaluate the role of systemic inflammation, immune responses, and oral microbiome dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of both periodontitis and CVD. By examining these aspects, we can provide valuable insights into the development of novel therapeutic approaches and preventive strategies for individuals at risk of developing CVD due to periodontitis.

This Research Topic welcomes contributions that address various themes related to the clinical shared problems encountered in the treatment of patients with periodontitis and cardiovascular disease. Potential areas of focus include but are not limited to:

-Epidemiological studies examining the association between periodontitis and different manifestations of cardiovascular disease.
-Mechanistic investigations exploring the biological pathways linking periodontitis and cardiovascular disease.
-Evaluation of the impact of periodontal treatment on cardiovascular health outcomes.
-Assessment of systemic inflammation, immune responses, and the oral microbiome in relation to periodontitis and cardiovascular disease.
-Identification of novel therapeutic targets and interventions for improving patient management and outcomes.

We encourage original research articles, reviews, meta-analyses, clinical trials, and case studies to contribute to this Research Topic. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, this collection aims to advance our understanding of the shared problems between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease, ultimately improving patient care and outcomes in both fields.

Keywords: Periodontitis, Cardiovascular diseases, Endothelial dysfunction, Atherosclerosis, Oral biofilm, Dysbiosis, Non-surgical periodontal treatment

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements.
