About this Research Topic
The interconnection between oral and mental health is a complex and bidirectional relationship. One particular aspect is that people with mental health conditions are more prone to poor oral health and oral diseases. This is believed to be due to a lack of self-care and neglect of oral hygiene habits as a result of their mental health issues. Another specific aspect to consider is that inflammation caused by periodontal disease and other oral conditions can also contribute to chronic systemic inflammation. This systemic inflammation has been associated with the onset of mental health disorders like depression and anxiety. While the exact causal mechanisms are not yet fully comprehended, researchers posit that the inflammatory molecules released in the oral cavity can trigger an immune response maybe result in mental health issues.
We are pleased to announce a call for papers focusing on the nexus between various oral diseases, such as oral cancer and inflammatory conditions, and their potential impact on mental health, particularly depression. This research topic aims to gather interdisciplinary research uncovering the complex bidirectional relationships and underlying mechanisms linking oral health with mental well-being.
To contribute to this research topic, please submit your manuscript through our online submission system. All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer-review process, and those that are accepted will reflect the highest quality research in this field. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives from experts in dentistry, psychiatry, psychology, immunology, neuroscience, and related fields. Submissions should address topics such as:
1. The application of genetic epidemiology and epidemiological to investigate the associations between various oral diseases and mental health disorders, including depression.
2. Oral inflammation and its possible role in the development and progression of mental health disorders, including the effects of cytokines and other inflammatory mediators.
3. Investigations into the biological mechanisms connecting oral cancer and the onset or exacerbation of mental health issues.
4. Evaluation of oral health interventions and their impact on mental health outcomes – exploring the potential for clinical synergy.
5. The role of the immune system, the oral-gut-brain axis, and the oral microbiome in linking oral disease with mental health disorders.
6. The psychosocial factors contributing to the relationship between oral diseases and mental health, such as stress, social support, and coping mechanisms.
7. Integrating oral health care and mental health care into a comprehensive treatment approach - challenges and opportunities.
We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions as we work to advance our understanding of the intricate connections between oral health and mental well-being.
