The rapidly advancing field of nanomedicine offers tremendous potential for transforming oral health care. By working at the nanoscale, researchers have been able to develop innovative technologies with unique properties, changing the way we diagnose, prevent, and treat various oral diseases. Emerging technologies such as nanoparticles, nanosensors, nanorobotics, and nanofluidic devices may provide precision-guided, safe, and affordable therapeutic modalities to address unmet needs in oral health.

Many challenges persist in applying nanotechnologies to oral medicine due to saliva flow, the highly diverse oral microbiome/microenvironments, and the anatomical complexity of the oral cavity, the latter including the coexistence of mucosal and dental hard tissue, for example. Moreover, the production, use, and disposal of nanomaterials may not be cost-effective and could pose an environmental impact. This Research Topic highlights basic and clinical studies focusing on emerging nanotechnologies aimed at promoting oral health, with particular interest in their in vivo/clinical efficacy, biocompatibility, and cost-effectiveness.

Specific themes include but are not limited to:

1. Development of new nanomaterials/nanotechnologies with potential applications in oral health

2. In vitro, in vivo, and clinical evaluations of nanotechnology-based approaches

3. Modification and enhancement of traditional dental materials using nanotechnologies

4. Review articles for existing and emerging nanomaterials/nanotechnologies in oral health

Keywords: Nanotechnologies, Oral Disease, Prevention, Diagnosis, Therapy, Health Care

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
