This Research Topic addresses the way industrial pollutants (heavy metals, gasses, radioactive wastes, pharmaceutical, body sprays, nanoparticles, …) interact with plants. We particularly focus on the impact that pollutants have on the physiology and the biochemistry of plants.
Gaseous, liquid, or solid wastes from industries as well as improper disposal of the products by users are detrimental to the environment. Notably, hazardous industrial effluents affect the flora and fauna of nearby areas. When industrial waste management systems are not efficient, the impact of industrial pollutant increases by several folds.
Impacts of gaseous pollutants and heavy metals on plants have been and are still extensively studied. Due to the evolution of industries, new pollutants are regularly introduced in the environment. Some of the most persistent pollutants are pesticides, personal care body sprays, nanoparticles, or pharmaceuticals. It is still not clear how the plants react towards the increasing concentration of these pollutants.
This Research Topic welcomes manuscripts that further our mechanistic understanding of the impact of industrial pollutants on plant physiology, biochemistry, and productivity. We particularly welcome manuscripts dealing with:
• The impact and mechanism of interaction of industrial gasses, heavy metals, nanoparticles, pharmaceuticals, radioactive wastes or other novel industrial pollutant with plants.
• The accumulation of industrial pollutant in plants and phytoremediation.
We encourage the submission of Reviews, Opinions, and Original Research article types.
